A05: Serious Game Analysis

Estimated time: 3 hours

Task:  Read/watch the material provided by the four serious game experts in the Resources section for this module.  Reflect on what they said, perhaps looking up additional work by them if you like, and then create a short white paper that includes the following:

  • A brief, one paragraph summary of each expert’s viewpoint on serious games (or “gamification”). (Four paragraphs total).
  • One or more concluding paragraphs that present your perspective on serious games/gamification based upon your own experiences and the insights you gained from these resources. Your perspective can agree with some of the experts, disagree with others, or strike off in some entirely new direction.

The essay should be “stand-alone” and understandable to those not participating in this course.   You can and should include links to any resources you used (including the four links provided in this module), so that readers do not have to refer to the course in order to understand your essay.

Publish your essay online in some manner.  If you maintain a blog or professional portfolio, provide your essay as a posting.

Submission instructions:  Send email to Philip Johnson with a link to your essay.  Do not include the essay as an attached document to the email. This is because I want to circulate the list of links after submission so that everyone can read all the essays and learn from each other’s perspective.  In the body of the email, you can also provide any comments you like, positive or negative, about this assignment.  Note: the subject line must be [ICS 691: A05].  If the subject line is different, then I might not see the email and you might not get credit for this assignment.

This assignment is due at the date and time specified on the calendar.

Evaluation: Your essay will be evaluated based upon the quality of the summaries, the level of insight and perspective provided about serious games, and the quality of presentation (grammar, spelling, formatting, etc.)
